The year is 1910.
Trudy Cameron, an 11-year-old girl introduced to listeners in The Dream Bucket, meets a 13-year-old neighbor, Manuela Blayne. Trudy and her seven-year-old stepsister, Bailey Benton, make friends with Manuela, while Trudy realizes she can never understand her new friend.
Yasmin, Manuela's mother, has given the girl to Nettie and Herschel Blayne, who were born into slavery. Manuela's grandmother, Nettie, is epileptic. Her grandfather, Herschel, an alcoholic, makes and sells all kinds of illegal spirits.
Manuela Blayne the fourth book in the Covington Chronicles. It is a complete story that stands alone. To understand some of the characters fully, however, it would be beneficial to listen to The Dream Bucket first. In first-person point of view, Trudy tells the story in her own words.
As Trudy and her siblings mature, they indulge in surprising mischief. The novella tells the struggles of young people to achieve what they hope for by overcoming various obstacles. Manuela Blayne is not primarily a romance, but it contains an unexpected romance.
Trudy sees how different her opportunities are from those afforded to Manuela. Trudy finds it impossible not to suffer some of what her friend endures. She hopes to help her friend make a difference in life, while Manuela exemplifies a beautiful new kind of hope.

I couldn't wait to read the novella sequel to THE DREAM BUCKET by Mary Lou Cheatham: MANUELA BLAYNE: A LIFE APART, and I wasn't disappointed. Key character Trudy Cameron is now eleven years old in the Deep South of 1910, and her life has changed tremendously for the better since her widowed mama married longtime neighbor and friend Samuel Benton. But Trudy learns that life is not nearly as safe and good for her 13-year-old African American friend Manuela Blayne. The South was at times a very cruel place to live for Manuela, and this time Trudy cannot fix everything as she always tries to do. Trudy does, however, learn a profound lesson in forgiveness and inner strength through her friend. You will be deeply moved by the main storyline, and smiles and laughter will creep in along the way as you spend a summer with Trudy Cameron. I loved the book and look forward to learning more about the Camerons and Bentons as their life evolves. Excellent reading from an excellent author!Product details

Manuela Blayne Covington Chronicles Book 4 (Audible Audio Edition) Mary Lou Cheatham Victoria Phelps Books Reviews
a different kind of book. That appeals to some people.
I enjoyed reading Manuela Blayne so much, I started it and did not put it down until I finished, author is very expletive about every detail. It keeps your interest.
I loved Manuela Blayne! Mary Lou Cheatham is a great author......who took me back in time to "those days"....when there really was a School Fair Day, when kids were kids.....and when people cared for each other. I grieved for Manuela and for Trudy, her friend.
Thanks, Mary Lou!! Keep writing!
This is the most powerful of the Covington Chronicles. It addresses the difficult issues of racial violence, rape and the lack of medical knowledge in the rural South in 1910 through the eyes of a perceptive 12-year-old girl. The writer is able to suggest frightening, violent episodes without depicting every graphic detail; our imagination fills in the rest. The book is hard to put down!
Mary Lou writes excellent stories that grip at your heart. This story is no exception. Set in times past, when certain things weren't talked about, this book tells the story of a sweet, young girl and her friendship with someone whose life is far different than her own.
Great book. Love reading from this era
Reading Manuela Blayne A Life Apart was like reading about the world of my grandparents and my parents in rural south Mississippi in the early 1900s. Life was hard and sadly this was a time of many life inequities. The characters are real. Sweet, innocent Manuela looks for the good in the world and has faith in God. The adolescents in this book face many life changing experiences that mold their lives into the person they become. I enjoyed the experience of understanding more about the environment, people and culture of my ancestors. Well worth your time!
